I went to UC Berkeley this morning to check on the status of my application.
Although the result is within my expectation, it is still so hard to face this
first rejection. Husband is here so I don't know if I could choose schools out
of CA.
They admitted 90 out of 800-900, including 400 Chinese. (it seems
unthinkingable!) Four Chinese students were admitted (1 from Hong Kong, three
from China).
Two out of the three applied from the US, one graduated from Princeton and
another one seems from Harvard or some other top schools. Don't know who is the
lucky one applying from China.
The first round selection is very strict GPA, TOEFL, GRE, etc. About 300 were
dropped here (i.e. were not reviewed by the admission committee.) For those who
passed the first round, they have a cover sheet for each application. The sheet
lists about 8-10 idems, each idem ranks from 1-5. If your GRE
is strong, then 5; if your GPA is 3.3 out of 4 (like me), then 3. I saw GRE,
under GPA, grad-GPA, institution (the rank of your school), recommendation,
publication honer, SOP, under major, math, etc. (not sure if there is TOEFL, I
guess it should be) If any one of them is under 3, you will be kicked off in
this round.
(it seems one professor was in charge of all the Asian students application)
Then, only a few were left and were reviewed by the other members of admission
committee. Besides the 90 best, a few were catogorized as above average. There
is no waiting list. But if there is still a space, it will be selected from the
above average pool. While, the useful tips are 1. If your GPA is under 3.6, don'
t even try! The only exception for this year is a guy from MIT with GPA 3.5.
2. your under school, major and GPA are very important, almost weight 13. My
under major was social science, too weak!
3. GRE can not be low, but if higher than a certain score, it will be the same.
My GRE is extremely high but no help. (Q can not be lower than 765 for this
year)
4. Math preparation is extremely important. Especially multi-variable calculus
(not sure she refered to vector-calculus)
5. If you feel you have met all the creteria and want to try this school from
China, try to get a recommendation from highly reputated economist or professor,
it will help you stand out from others.
The letters of rejection and admission will be sent out by mail next week. No
e-I feel calm now and wish you all a good luck!
