Q:Society should identify those children who have special talents and abilities
and begin training them at an early age so that they can eventually excel in
their areas of ability. Otherwise, these talents are likely to remain
undeveloped.
The son of my professor in the research field of journalism is regarded as a
talented boy. He achieved his learning tasks in the high school many years ago
and now he is the youngest student in the top university of China. However,
there was not any extra education from the professor to her son, further the
boy was treated as his common companies. More freedom he got, more experience
he gained. And eventually the boy can excel in his ability without any
intentional training. In that case children who have special talents and
abilities should probably not be treated specially. Moreover parents and
teachers should not be worried about the talented children too much since a
free environment is just all to support their accomplishment.
Though it is not beneficial to mix talented children with common ones in the
same class and with the same method of teaching, there is no reason to identify
that special treatments make talented children grow up rapidly and more
successful. There are many examples of failure in educating talented children.
For instance, a talented child in the Ancient China was called Fang Zhongyong
who was educated by his father quite specially and he also brought his father
pride and happiness when other people praised and admired him. However, after
fifteen years since he was born he became more and more common because his
father could not supply more knowledge to his son and his son was tired of
showing himself that way. Unfortunately such a talented boy fell down in a very
young age, and no praise and encouragement appeared again. The story presents
the suitable evidence that instead of success the talented children may gain
worse termination under special treatment. Obviously, educated and directed by
his father, Fang Zhongyong was not capable of learning and studying by himself
and did not realize what area he should develop in when he grew up. Meanwhile
he knew nothing about the roughness and grievance of life so that he could not
bear the failure in life. In some sense he was depressed when he realized that
he has the same knowledge as other youngsters and never braced up again.
Actually, talented children are inclined to the normal life in their life time
and they can learn more in the process of learning with other children. In a
short eyesight, as many educators and parents believe, normal education can
delay their achievement to be accomplished, however, this can evoke more
intelligence of the talented children to make them successful. First, in the
common school, besides enough knowledge to be spread, children can receive the
information about how to learn, how to read and how to develop their interests,
and replaced by knowledge instillment, all of these can always be omitted in
the special education. Under the circumstances talented children become a
learning and reciting machine and know little about learning methods. Second,
when communicating with common children, the talented children will enrich
their experiences and broaden their prospects. It is necessary for them to
learn how to communicate with others and how to make themselves gregarious. Or
maybe they have enough knowledge and the ability of analysis, they can only
live in their own room and feel lonely. Not only do they need learning, but
also they need friends and good moods every day. Third, staying with common
children makes talented children avoid severe competition with other talented
children and learn more from common children. Participating in interesting
games, playing football matches, dancing in the ball and singing in the party
bring the talented children opportunities to discover and learn the good
aspects of the common children. By contrast standing with the talented children,
they have to be alert all the time to cope with the coming competition from
other talented children, and then they discover more shortcomings that make
them disgust each other.
In conclusion, it is apparent that the talented children should be provided
freedom to make them grow up more easily. As known, success in an early age is
not a real success. What people can do is just to let the talented children to
grow up more strongly and gain more experiences of life. Undoubtedly they can
succeed in their areas because talents can only be developed without any
restraint.
